"Living the Simple Life"

How can one live a simple life in today's world? It's simple, at least in concept. Luke 12:15 may state the main idea most concisely: "Then he said to them, 'Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.'" (NIV) In my opinion and in my experience, the way to simply one's life is to let go of worldly things and put more of the focus on God. I may expand this article in time, but for now I have decided to keep it fairly short. I believe the formula that you need to live a simple life should be fairly simple itself.

My use of the phrase "worldly things" doesn't just include material possessions, though that is where I am going to start. So many people get caught up in buying all the latest gadgets or a wide variety of other material things that they lose all sight of what is truly important in life. How often do we hear about a rich person who is desperately unhappy? I will address this idea further in my article "To Whom Does Your Money Belong?" For now, I will just say that I believe ridding yourself of things you don't need is a vital first step in simplifying your life. Otherwise, you are in danger of being overwhelmed by so much "stuff" that you feel like your own life is out of control.

In addition to freeing yourself from "things," make sure you free up your time as well. Wasting hours a day in front of the TV or computer is not what God wants for any of us. I also don't believe He wants us to say "yes" to every single opportunity that may come our way, even when children are involved. I probably won't give much advice related to raising children on my website because I don't have children of my own at this point in time, but I do think it is extremely important to pick out one or two activities that your child can do very well and say "no" to the rest. Slow down, simplify things, spend time together as a family, and spend time with God each and every day.

If you make a sincere effort to do these two things, I believe you will have a simpler, more relaxed life as a result. Most importantly, you'll have more time to spend with God. I live a very simple life myself and am always happy and content with it. I don't have all that much, compared to a lot of people, but I always have all that I need. God has never failed to provide that. If you would like more specific advice on how you can live a simpler life from me, feel free to contact me!
